Your Questions Answered

Some of the questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, just ask us and we will be happy to help.

You are in the right place. Our team will always take the time to make you feel at ease, whether you are coming back to us or it is your first visit. If needles are the worry, we use The Wand to numb you almost painlessly, without the big needle or the sting, and we can talk through oral or intravenous sedation if you would like it. Tell us how you feel when you book and we will work around it.

If you cannot get an appointment straight away, rinse your mouth with warm water and keep the area as clean as you can until we can see you. Depending on how much damage there is, treatment usually means smoothing the tooth and building it back up with a tooth-coloured composite, or fitting a dental crown. If the nerve inside the tooth has been damaged, we may need to carry out a root canal. Call us as soon as you can so we can arrange an emergency appointment.

No. Straightening teeth as an adult is becoming more and more common, and it is not only about looks, because straighter teeth are easier to keep clean and healthy. Book in and we can talk through the options that would suit you.

Whitening can be a great part of a smile makeover, but it is not right for everyone. We always check first, as it may not be recommended if you have very sensitive teeth, and it cannot change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers. Make an appointment and we can explain what would and would not work for your teeth.

Veneers and crowns are similar, as both can be made from porcelain or ceramic and colour matched to your own teeth. The difference is how much they cover. A veneer is a very thin layer bonded to the front of the tooth, while a crown covers the whole tooth. You may need a crown if there is more damage or discolouration. Our dentists can look at your teeth and advise the right option for you.

Bleeding gums are usually a sign that something needs attention, not something to ignore. It normally happens when plaque, a soft film of bacteria, is left on the teeth and irritates the gums. This causes inflammation called gingivitis, which can turn into gum disease if it is not dealt with. Left alone, plaque hardens into tartar, which only a dentist or hygienist can remove. Keep brushing gently even if the gums bleed, clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes, and the bleeding should settle within a few days. A softer brush can help while the gums are sore, and if you have recently stopped smoking you may notice more bleeding as the blood flow to your gums improves. If the bleeding does not stop, book in so we can check it and give you the right advice.

Start with a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth, and it helps to rub a little into the sensitive area before bed to protect the surface. Try to go easy on strongly acidic foods and drinks, and wait at least an hour after eating before you brush, as brushing too soon can make sensitivity worse. Grinding your teeth can also be a cause, and a night guard may help. If the pain carries on, speak to us, because a number of things can cause sensitivity and we can find the cause and the right treatment.
