Teeth Whitening

Lighten the natural colour of your teeth and lift the stains that build up over the years. We do it two ways, in the practice in about an hour or at home with custom-made trays, and we check it suits you before we start. It is one of the simplest ways to feel better about your smile.

Treatment Overview

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a gentle way to lighten the natural colour of your teeth and lift the stains that build up from tea, coffee, red wine, smoking and simply getting older. It does not file or drill anything. It uses a whitening gel to lift the colour from within the tooth, so your own teeth end up looking cleaner and brighter.
We offer whitening two ways, and many patients use both. There is a treatment we do here in the practice that takes about an hour, and a take-home kit with trays made to fit your teeth that you wear at home. The take-home kit is also a handy way to top up the colour later.
Before any whitening, we check that it is right for you. Whitening suits most people, but not everyone, and it works better on some teeth than others. We talk you through what to expect for your teeth and agree the shade you are aiming for at the start, so there are no surprises. One thing worth knowing early: whitening only changes the colour of your natural teeth. It cannot change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers. If any of those show when you smile, we will explain what that means for your result and what the options are.
Whitening might suit you if
  • Your teeth have yellowed or dulled over the years
  • Tea, coffee, red wine or smoking have stained them
  • You want a lift before a wedding or a big event
  • You are starting a smile makeover and want a brighter base
  • You would rather change the colour without touching the tooth itself
What we check first
  • That your teeth and gums are healthy
  • How sensitive your teeth are, as very sensitive teeth may need care
  • Whether any fillings, crowns or veneers show when you smile
  • The shade you have now and the shade you are aiming for
  • Which method, in-practice or take-home, suits you best

The Process

How Whitening Works at Waterside

01

We check it suits you

We look at your teeth and gums, check how sensitive your teeth are, and see whether any fillings or crowns show when you smile. If whitening is not the best option for you, we will say so.

02

We agree the shade

We look at the colour you have now and the colour you are aiming for, so you know what to expect before anything starts.

03

Your whitening

In the practice, the treatment takes about an hour while you sit back and relax. At home, we make trays to fit your teeth and show you exactly how to use them, worn overnight or for one to two hours during the day.

04

A top-up kit and simple aftercare

Take-home trays make it easy to top up the colour later. We will give you simple advice on food, drink and looking after the result, and you can always call us if you have a question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions patients ask us.

A few of the things patients ask us most often. If your question isn't here, just get in touch — we're happy to talk it through.

Whitening uses a gel to lighten the natural colour of your teeth and lift the stains that build up over time. It does not drill or file anything. We offer it two ways: a treatment in the practice that takes about an hour, and a take-home kit with trays made to fit your teeth that you wear overnight, or for one to two hours during the day. Many patients use both.

We always check the suitability of your teeth first, as whitening is not recommended for
everyone, for example some patients with very sensitive teeth. It is also important to know that we may not be able to treat all of your teeth. Whitening cannot alter the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers. Book in and we can explain what to expect and suggest the options open to you.

No. Whitening only lifts the colour of your natural teeth. It has no effect on fillings, crowns or veneers. If any of those show when you smile, we will talk through what that means for your result before you start, so there are no surprises.

It depends on the teeth you start with, so we agree the shade you are aiming for with you at the start rather than promise a fixed result. Whitening lifts your own natural colour, so the aim is teeth that look like a cleaner, brighter version of your own, not someone else's.

Used properly, whitening is gentle and does not damage your teeth. Some people notice a little short-term sensitivity, which usually settles. We check how sensitive your teeth are before we start, and we tell you how to keep any sensitivity to a minimum. If anything is
uncomfortable afterwards, just call us.

That depends on you, and on how much tea, coffee, red wine and smoking your teeth are exposed to. It is not permanent, which is why take-home trays are useful for topping up the colour later. We will give you simple advice on keeping the result looking good for as long as possible.

Yes, and whitening is one of the gentlest things we do, with no needle involved for the whitening itself. Tell us when you book that you are nervous. Longer appointments, a calm surgery and the same familiar faces every visit make it far easier than many people expect.

Yes, lots of people do. Come and see us in good time so we can check it suits you, agree the shade and, if you want, make take-home trays so you can get the colour just right before the day.

Yes. We are a private practice and we publish our prices, so you get an itemised cost before anything starts. You can pay using finance, and our Practice Plan lets you spread the cost of routine care across the year with a simple monthly payment.
