Treatment Overview

What is a Fluoride Treatment?

A fluoride treatment is a quick, painless way to strengthen your teeth against decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral that hardens the enamel, the tough outer surface of the tooth, and helps it stand up to the acid that causes decay. We paint a fluoride varnish onto the teeth, it sets in seconds, and that is it.
Your enamel is under attack every day from the acid that bacteria make when you eat and drink, especially sugary or acidic things. Fluoride helps put back some of the minerals that acid strips out, and makes the surface more resistant next time. It is not a replacement for brushing and cleaning between your teeth, but it gives them a helpful boost.
Fluoride varnish is especially useful for children, whose new adult teeth benefit from the extra protection while they settle in. It also helps adults who are prone to decay, who have sensitive teeth, who wear braces, who have a dry mouth, or who have several fillings and want to protect the rest. If that sounds like you, we may suggest adding it to your check-up or hygiene visit. There is no drilling and no injection. We simply clean and dry the teeth, paint on the varnish, and you are done in a few minutes. That makes it one of the easiest treatments we do, which helps if you or your child feels nervous.
Fluoride can help if
  • Your child's new adult teeth are coming through
  • You or your child are prone to tooth decay
  • You have sensitive teeth
  • You wear braces or an appliance
  • You have a dry mouth, which raises the risk of decay
  • You already have several fillings and want to protect the rest
What a fluoride treatment does
  • Strengthens the enamel against decay
  • Helps put back minerals that acid strips out
  • Can help settle mild sensitivity
  • Adds protection on top of brushing at home
  • Takes only a few minutes, with no drilling or injections
  • Fits easily into a check-up or hygiene visit

The Process

What Happens at a Fluoride Appointment

01

We check if it will help

Fluoride is not for everyone. At your check-up we look at your risk of decay and whether the extra protection is worth it for you or your child.

02

We clean and dry the teeth

The varnish works best on a clean, dry surface, so we give the teeth a quick wipe and dry first.

03

We paint on the varnish

We brush the fluoride varnish onto the teeth and it sets in seconds. There is no drilling and no injection, and it does not hurt.

04

Simple aftercare

We will tell you whether to hold off eating or drinking for a short while so it can work. That is the only thing to remember, and we go through it with you before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions patients ask us.

A few of the things patients ask us most often. If your question isn't here, just get in touch — we're happy to talk it through.

It is a quick, painless coating we paint onto the teeth to strengthen them against decay.
Fluoride is a natural mineral that hardens the enamel, the hard outer surface of the tooth,
so it stands up better to the acid that causes cavities.

No, not at all. There is no drilling and no injection. We clean and dry the teeth, paint on the varnish, and it sets in seconds. It is one of the easiest and gentlest treatments we do, which is handy for children and nervous patients.

Yes. Fluoride varnish is widely used and applied in a small, controlled amount, which is completely different from swallowing fluoride. It is one of the most useful things we can do to protect children's teeth. If you have any worries, ask us and we will talk them through.

It helps anyone at higher risk of decay. That often means children with new adult teeth, but also adults who get cavities easily, have sensitive teeth, wear braces, have a dry mouth, or already have several fillings. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth it for you.

It depends on your risk of decay. Some people benefit a couple of times a year, others less often. We will suggest what suits you or your child rather than apply a blanket rule.

Adults can have it too. It is useful for anyone prone to decay or sensitivity, and it is easy to
add to a routine check-up or hygiene visit.

No. It works alongside good brushing and cleaning between your teeth, not instead of it. Think of it as an extra layer of protection on top of looking after your teeth at home.

We may ask you to wait a little while so the varnish can set and do its job. We will tell you
exactly what to do on the day, and it is nothing more complicated than that.
