What Is a Snoring Appliance?

Snoring happens when the soft tissues at the back of your throat relax during sleep and vibrate as you breathe. One thing that can make it worse is your lower jaw and tongue dropping back and narrowing your airway. A snoring appliance is designed to deal with exactly that.
It is a custom-made device, a bit like a slim gum shield, that you wear while you sleep. Its proper name is a mandibular advancement device. "Mandibular" just means the lower jaw, and "advancement" means moving it forward. The appliance gently holds your lower jaw a little forward of its resting position, which helps keep the airway at the back of your throat open. With more room to breathe, the soft tissues vibrate less, and for many people that means quieter snoring, or none at all.
Because it is made to fit your teeth exactly, it is more comfortable and stays put better than the one-size-fits-all versions you can buy online or in a chemist. We take a mould or a scan of your teeth, a dental lab makes the device to match, and we check the fit and adjust it when it is ready.
It is worth being straight about what this does and does not do. A snoring appliance can help reduce snoring. It is not a guaranteed cure, it does not suit everyone, and it does not treat sleep apnoea, which is a medical condition where your breathing actually stops and starts while you sleep. There is more on that in the questions below, and it matters, so please read it.

What Happens When You Come In

We talk about your snoring

We ask how long it has been going on, how bad it is, whether it changes with your position, and how it is affecting you and your partner. If anything you tell us points to a medical sleep problem, we will say so.

We check it is the right option

We look at your teeth, gums and jaw to make sure an appliance would suit you and that your teeth can hold one comfortably. If we have any concern that your snoring could be a sign of sleep apnoea, we will ask you to see your GP first.

We make it to fit

We take a mould or a digital scan of your teeth, and a dental lab makes your appliance to match. When it is ready, we check the fit and make any small adjustments.

We follow up

We check how you are getting on with it, whether it is helping, and whether it needs any tweaks. It can take a little while to settle into wearing one.

Waterside Dental is a private practice in Hythe, owned and led by principal dentist Dr Nikos Louskos since 2017. It has recently been refurbished to feel more like home than a clinic, and is run by a small, hand-picked team — so you'll always see a familiar face.
Care here is unhurried and patient-led. Appointments are longer so concerns can be talked through properly, treatment is explained in plain language, and nothing is rushed — with breaks during longer procedures whenever you need them.

Meet Dr Nikos Louskos.

DDS · MSc Endodontics · GDC No. 102626
Principal dentist and practice owner, with a special interest in endodontics.
Dr Nikos Louskos qualified in Athens in 2005 and moved to the UK in 2006. He worked as an associate at Waterside before taking ownership of the practice in 2017.
In 2016 he completed a Master's in Endodontic Practice at Queen Mary University of London. He accepts referrals for complex root canal cases, which he treats under a microscope, and enjoys all aspects of general dentistry.

It is not guaranteed to work for everyone, but many people find it makes their snoring quieter or stops it.

No, and the difference matters. Shop-bought devices are one-size-fits-all, so they are often bulky, uncomfortable and easy to lose in the night. Ours is made to fit your teeth exactly, from a mould or a scan, so it is more comfortable, stays in place and does its job better.

No. We do not treat sleep apnoea, and this appliance is not designed for it. Sleep apnoea is a medical condition where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you sleep, and it needs proper medical diagnosis and care. If you have been diagnosed with it, or you think you might have it, please speak to your GP.

Snoring on its own is usually just snoring. But it can sometimes be a sign of sleep apnoea, especially if you also gasp or seem to stop breathing in your sleep, wake up choking, or feel exhausted during the day. If any of that sounds familiar, see your GP before anything else, because it sits outside what a dental appliance can safely deal with.

Most people get used to it within a week or two. It feels strange at first, as anything in your mouth overnight does, but because it is made to fit you it is far more comfortable than an off-the-shelf one. We check the fit when it is ready and adjust it if you need us to.

Often you notice a difference quite quickly, but it can take a little while to settle into wearing one every night and to get the position right. We follow up to see how you are getting on and make any tweaks.

We do not list a fixed price, because the appliance is made to fit you and the right one depends on your teeth and your needs. You get the exact cost in writing after your consultation, before anything is made. A new patient examination, where this starts, is £92.
