Treatment Overview

What Is a Full Mouth Rehabilitation?

Full mouth rehabilitation is a way of rebuilding most or all of your teeth as one planned course of treatment, rather than fixing one tooth at a time. "Rehabilitation" simply means bringing your mouth back to good working order. You may also hear it called a full mouth reconstruction, which means the same thing.
It is usually for people whose teeth have taken a lot of damage over the years. That might be heavy wear from grinding, several broken or heavily filled teeth, a bite that has dropped as teeth have been lost, or a mouth full of old dental work that is all starting to fail at once. When that much is going on, sorting it all together gives a better and longer-lasting result than patching up one problem, then the next, then the one after that.
A rehabilitation is not a single treatment. It is a plan that brings together the treatments you actually need. That can include crowns (caps that cover a whole tooth), veneers (thin shells over the front of a tooth), bridges (replacement teeth anchored to the teeth either side of a gap), implants (posts fixed into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth), fillings, root canal treatment (clearing infection from inside a tooth to save it) and dentures. Part of the work is also getting your bite right, so your teeth meet evenly and stop wearing each other down.
Because every mouth is different, we never start with a fixed package. We examine everything, take the records we need, and build a plan around your mouth, your priorities and your budget. You get that plan in writing, with the stages, a rough timescale and the exact cost of every part, before any treatment begins. Nothing is done without you agreeing to it first.
This may be for you if:
  • Your teeth are badly worn down, flattened or short
  • Years of grinding or clenching have taken their toll
  • You have several broken, cracked or heavily filled teeth
  • You have lost teeth and your bite feels like it has dropped or shifted
  • A lot of your old crowns, fillings or bridges are failing together
  • You are tired of fixing one tooth at a time and want a proper plan
What a rehabilitation can involve:
  • Crowns, to cap and protect worn or broken teeth
  • Veneers, to rebuild worn or chipped front teeth
  • Bridges or implants, to replace missing teeth
  • Root canal treatment, where a tooth needs saving from the inside
  • New fillings, inlays or onlays
  • Balancing your bite so teeth stop wearing unevenly

The Process

How a Rehabilitation Comes Together

01

We listen first

Before we look, we ask what is bothering you, what you struggle with day to day, and what you want back. Eating comfortably, a smile you are happy with, or an end to constant repairs. If you are nervous, this is where you tell us, and it changes how we do everything after it.

02

A full assessment

We examine every tooth, your gums, your bite and your jaw, and take digital X-rays, which use far less radiation than older film. For a case this size we also take photos and, where useful, moulds or a digital scan, so we can plan away from the chair.

03

A staged written plan

We put together a plan that sets out exactly what needs doing, in what order, over what sort of timescale, and what every stage costs. We talk it through with you and answer your questions. Nothing is booked until you are happy.

04

Treatment, in stages

We work through the plan in steps you can manage, not all in one go. We keep checking the result as we build it, and there is time in every visit so nothing is rushed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions patients ask us.

A few of the things patients ask us most often. If your question isn't here, just get in touch — we're happy to talk it through.

It means rebuilding most or all of your teeth as one planned course of treatment, rather than fixing one tooth at a time. It is for people with a lot of wear, damage, old dental work or missing teeth, where sorting everything together gives a better and longer-lasting result. We plan the whole thing first, then work through it in stages.

Yes. Full mouth rehabilitation and full mouth reconstruction are two names for the same thing: a planned rebuild of your teeth and bite. The approach is the same either way, plan it all first, then carry it out in stages.

It depends on how much needs doing, so there is no single answer that would be true for everyone. Some plans take a few months, larger ones longer. What we can do is give you a realistic timescale in your written plan, before you start, so you can plan around it.

We go to a lot of trouble to keep treatment comfortable. We use The Wand, which numbs you without the big needle or the sting, and we allow longer appointments so nothing is rushed. If you are anxious, we also offer sedation, either a tablet or through a vein, to help you relax. Tell us how you feel and we will work around it.

No, and that is rather the point of planning it properly. We break the work into stages you can manage, and we agree the order with you. Some people want it done as steadily as possible, others prefer to spread it out. We fit the pace to you.

There is no set price, because every mouth needs something different. After your consultation you get a written plan with the exact cost of every stage, so there are no surprises. Many patients spread larger plans with finance, and we will talk you through the options before you commit.

Wherever we sensibly can, we would rather save and rebuild your own teeth than replace them. Keeping your natural teeth is almost always better. Where a tooth is too far gone, we will tell you honestly and talk you through the best way to replace it.

Almost never. Some of our patients come to us after a long time away, often after a bad experience elsewhere, with a lot they feel embarrassed about. There is no lecture here. We start with where you are now and build a plan from there, at a pace you are comfortable with.
