Bleeding gums are common, but they are not normal. They are usually caused by plaque, a soft film of bacteria that builds up on the teeth and irritates the gums. This early inflammation is called gingivitis. If the plaque is not cleaned away it hardens into tartar, which only a dentist or hygienist can remove. Keep brushing, even if the gums bleed, and clean between your teeth every day. If the bleeding has not settled after a few days, book in, as you may need a professional clean.
