What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, sometimes called endodontic treatment, deals with disease or injury deep inside the tooth, in the soft part called the pulp, which most people know as the nerve. It is one of the most common dental procedures there is, and it can save a natural tooth that would otherwise have to come out. Saving your own tooth this way often means you avoid needing an implant or a bridge later.
At the centre of every tooth is pulp. It can become infected after a knock to the tooth, deep decay, a crack or chip, or repeated dental work over the years. You might notice swelling or an obvious injury to the tooth, sensitivity to hot and cold, or pain in the tooth and the gum around it. If you spot any of that, it is worth getting seen sooner rather than later.
The treatment itself removes the damaged or dead pulp and any infection from the tiny canals inside the root, then cleans, disinfects and seals them. That clears the source of the pain and lets you keep the tooth.
You may need a root canal if you have:
  • A constant toothache, or pain when you bite
  • Lasting sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum near a tooth
  • A tooth that has darkened or been knocked
  • A deep filling or crack that has reached the nerve

What Happens During Root Canal Treatment

We numb the tooth

We fully numb the tooth using The Wand, so the injection itself is gentle, with no big needle and no sting. You should feel pressure at most, not pain.

We clear the infection

Working under a microscope for accuracy, we remove the damaged or dead pulp and clear the infection from the canals inside the root.

We clean and seal

We clean and disinfect the canals, then seal them with a root filling to keep infection out.

We protect the tooth

A tooth that has had root canal treatment is often best protected with a crown afterwards. We will talk you through whether yours needs one.

Waterside Dental is a private practice in Hythe, owned and led by principal dentist Dr Nikos Louskos since 2017. It has recently been refurbished to feel more like home than a clinic, and is run by a small, hand-picked team — so you'll always see a familiar face.
Care here is unhurried and patient-led. Appointments are longer so concerns can be talked through properly, treatment is explained in plain language, and nothing is rushed — with breaks during longer procedures whenever you need them.

Meet Dr Nikos Louskos.

DDS · MSc Endodontics · GDC No. 102626
Principal dentist and practice owner, with a special interest in endodontics.
Dr Nikos Louskos qualified in Athens in 2005 and moved to the UK in 2006. He worked as an associate at Waterside before taking ownership of the practice in 2017.
In 2016 he completed a Master's in Endodontic Practice at Queen Mary University of London. He accepts referrals for complex root canal cases, which he treats under a microscope, and enjoys all aspects of general dentistry.

No. That reputation comes from before modern techniques. We numb the tooth fully first, using The Wand for a gentle injection, and we work under a microscope. Most patients say it feels much like having a filling. One patient told us the hour-plus procedure was completely pain free, and that is what we aim for every time.

Because keeping your own tooth is almost always better. A root canal saves a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted, and it can spare you needing an implant or a bridge to fill the gap later. Where a tooth genuinely cannot be saved, we will tell you honestly.

In most cases root canal treatment is done in a single visit. Trickier teeth, or a more severe infection, can need more than one. We will give you a realistic idea before we start.

Often, yes. A tooth that has had root canal treatment can become more brittle, so a crown is frequently the best way to protect it and keep it working. We will talk you through whether yours needs one.

The tooth may need re-treatment, which means the previous root filling is removed, the canals are re-cleaned and disinfected, and a new filling is placed. In some cases a small surgical procedure at the root tip is needed instead. We will assess it and explain the options.

Yes. Our practice has a dentist with a Master's Degree in Endodontic Practice, and we accept referrals from other dentists for complicated root canal cases, which we treat under a microscope. Ask your dentist to refer you, or contact us directly.

Root canal treatment is from £700. The final figure depends on the tooth, because back teeth have more canals than front teeth. You get an itemised cost in writing before anything starts, and you can spread it with our Practice Plan or finance.

Tell us when you book. We use The Wand for almost pain-free injections, we allow longer appointments so nothing is rushed, and you can bring someone in with you or hold a nurse's hand. If you need it, we also offer oral or intravenous sedation. Many of our patients came to us nervous and now find they manage fine.
