What We Do

Our Specialist Treatments.

TMJ Treatment

Your TMJ is the jaw joint just in front of your ear, the hinge that lets you open and close your mouth. This is help for pain and problems in that joint.

TMD Treatment

TMD is short for temporomandibular disorder, the name for problems with the jaw joint and the muscles that move it. Think clicking, aching, stiffness or trouble opening wide.

The Basics

What is Specialist Treatments?

These are the more involved treatments we offer once you go beyond a routine check-up and clean. Some deal with jaw pain, grinding and clenching. Some rebuild teeth that have worn down or broken over the years. Some plan a whole new smile from scratch. And one is a simple mouth appliance that can help with snoring.
They have one thing in common. They need time, planning and a bit of care to get right, which is exactly how this practice likes to work. Appointments here are longer on purpose, and for bigger treatments we plan the whole thing out before we start.
These treatments vary a lot in size and cost, from a single night guard to a full set of rebuilt teeth. Because of that, we never guess at the price. You get an itemised cost for your treatment before anything starts, and for larger work we set out the stages so you can plan around it.
Problems these treatments deal with:
  • Jaw pain, clicking or stiffness
  • Headaches or face ache, often worse in the morning
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth, day or night
  • Teeth that are worn down, flattened or chipped
  • Broken-down teeth, or a lot of old dental work that needs redoing
  • Wanting to plan a full smile makeover before you commit
  • Heavy snoring that affects you or your partner

Why It Matters

Why It Pays To Get These Right

Worn teeth do not repair themselves

Grinding and clenching slowly wear teeth down, and once the enamel is gone it does not grow back. Dealing with it early protects the teeth you still have.

Less pain, better sleep

A well-made night guard can ease jaw ache and morning headaches for many people, and a snoring appliance can help some people sleep more easily.

We plan before we start

Bigger treatments are planned in full first, so you know what is involved, how long it takes and what it costs before anything begins.

You can see the result first

With digital smile planning, you can see what your teeth could look like before you decide to go ahead.

The time these need

These are not five-minute appointments. We build in longer visits so nothing is rushed and you stay comfortable.

One team, one plan

The same familiar faces look after you from the first appointment to the last, so nothing gets lost between people.

The Process

What happens when you come in.

01

We talk first

Before anyone looks in your mouth, we ask what is bothering you, whether that is jaw pain, grinding, worn teeth or how your smile looks. If you are nervous, tell us. It changes how we do things.

02

A proper examination

We check your teeth, gums, bite and jaw, and take digital X-rays if you need them. For bigger work we also take photos and, where useful, a digital scan.

03

We show you what we found

On screen, so you can see it yourself rather than take our word for it. For smile planning, we can show you what the result could look like before you decide.

04

A plan and a price

Every option, what each one costs, and what happens if you do nothing. For larger treatments we set out the stages and rough timescale too. You decide from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions patients ask us.

A few of the things patients ask us most often. If your question isn't here, just get in touch — we're happy to talk it through.

They are closely related. TMJ is the jaw joint itself, the hinge just in front of your ear that lets you open and close your mouth. TMD, short for temporomandibular disorder, is the name for problems with that joint and the muscles around it, such as clicking, aching, stiffness or trouble opening wide. Most people use the two terms to mean the same thing: jaw pain and jaw trouble.

A dentist is a sensible first stop, because jaw pain is very often linked to grinding, clenching or how your teeth meet. There is a lot we can do to ease it, and we will explain what we find. If we think the cause sits outside dentistry, we will tell you honestly and point you to your GP or the right specialist rather than keep treating it here.

Grinding, or bruxism, is very common and many people do not know they do it until a partner mentions it or their teeth start to wear. The usual first step is a custom-made night guard, a slim plastic guard worn over your teeth while you sleep that protects them and eases the strain on your jaw. We will also talk through anything that might be making it worse.

It is made to fit your teeth exactly, which a shop-bought one is not. We take a mould or a digital scan of your teeth, a dental lab makes the guard to match, and we check the fit when it is ready. A guard made for your mouth is more comfortable, lasts longer and does its job properly.

It means rebuilding most or all of your teeth as one planned course of treatment, rather than fixing one tooth at a time. It is for people with a lot of wear, damage, old dental work or missing teeth, where sorting everything together gives a better and longer-lasting result. We plan the whole thing first and set out the stages, timescale and cost before any work starts.

It is a way of planning a new smile using photos of your face and teeth and some computer software. It lets us design how your teeth could look and, importantly, lets you see the result before you commit to any treatment. It is a planning tool, not a treatment on its own, so it sits at the start of bigger cosmetic or rebuilding work.

We can look at a custom mouth appliance that holds your lower jaw slightly forward while you sleep, which helps reduce snoring for some people. It is worth being honest that snoring can sometimes be a sign of a medical sleep problem such as sleep apnoea, which needs proper medical diagnosis. If we think that might be the case, we will point you to your GP first, because that sits outside what a dental appliance can safely treat.

The Practice Plan is aimed at your routine care, so it does not cover larger treatments in full, but it keeps your check-ups and hygiene visits simple to budget for. For the bigger treatments on this page, we set out the exact cost up front and offer a range of ways to pay, including finance. We will always talk you through the options before you decide.
