The Basics

What Is Children's Dentistry?

Children's dentistry is simply dental care built around younger patients. At this age the aim is not drilling and filling. It is keeping their teeth healthy, watching how their mouth is growing, and helping them feel relaxed about coming to the dentist so they carry that with them for life.
The easiest way to do that is to start early. Bringing your child along to your own appointments, even before they have many teeth, lets them get used to the sights and sounds with nothing happening to them. By the time they need a check-up of their own, it already feels normal.
We are a family-friendly practice and we do not rush children. Appointments here are longer on purpose, so there is time to go at your child's pace and let them ask questions.

Why It Matters

Why Starting Young Matters

They grow up unafraid

A child who gets used to the dentist early rarely develops the fear that keeps so many adults away. That one thing can shape a lifetime of dental health.

Good habits stick

The brushing and eating habits children learn now are the ones they keep. Getting them right early is far easier than trying to fix them later.

Problems are caught early

Baby teeth can decay quickly. Regular check-ups find any trouble while it is still small and simple to deal with.

We watch how the mouth grows

Children's jaws and teeth change fast. Seeing them regularly means we notice crowding or bite problems while they are easiest to guide.

The same familiar faces

Your child sees the same team each time, so the practice becomes a place they know rather than somewhere strange.

It saves you money later

Prevention costs a fraction of treatment. Healthy habits and early checks are the cheapest dentistry there is.

The Process

What Happens at Your Child's First Visit

01

We say hello first

We take a moment to let your child settle in and get comfortable before anything else. No rush and no surprises.

02

A gentle look

We count and check their teeth, look at their gums and bite, and see how everything is developing. We explain what we are doing as we go, in words they understand.

03

We show you both what we found

We talk you through anything worth knowing and give your child plenty of praise. The idea is that they leave feeling good about it.

04

Simple next steps

Any advice on brushing, diet or habits, when to come back, and what to look out for. If treatment is ever needed, we explain the options and the cost first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions patients ask us.

A few of the things patients ask us most often. If your question isn't here, just get in touch — we're happy to talk it through.

As soon as their first teeth come through, or by their first birthday, is a good time to start. Even before that, bringing them along to your own appointments helps them get used to it. These early visits are about getting comfortable, not treatment.

Yes. We are a family-friendly practice and we see children of all ages. A child examination is £27.50, or £46 for a first visit.

A check-up does not hurt. It is a gentle look at their teeth, with plenty of chat so they feel at ease. If your child ever does need treatment, we use The Wand, which numbs the area without the big needle or the sting, and we always go at their pace.

Gently, and without rushing. We keep appointments longer so there is time, we explain everything in simple words, and you stay with them throughout. The more relaxed the early visits are, the easier every visit after them tends to be.

A child examination is £27.50, or £46 for a first visit. We are a private practice, so there is no NHS waiting list, and our Practice Plan lets you spread routine care across simple monthly payments.

Usually every six months, but we will tell you what suits your child. Some need watching more closely while their teeth and jaw are developing. Others are fine on the standard six months.

It is very common and most children grow out of it on their own. If it carries on once the adult teeth start to come through, it can begin to affect the bite, so it is worth mentioning at a check-up. We will keep an eye on it and let you know if anything needs doing.

Earlier than many parents expect. Our orthodontics specialist looks at how a child's teeth and jaw are developing while they are still growing. Guiding things at that stage can reduce crowding and bite problems, and it sometimes means simpler treatment later. Our early orthodontic assessment is where this starts.
