What To Do Right Now
Toothache
Rinse gently with warm water. Over-the-counter painkillers can take the edge off for a while, so follow the instructions on the packet. Do not hold a painkiller against the gum, as it can burn the skin. Then call us.
Chipped or broken tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep the area as clean as you can. Save any pieces of the tooth if you can find them. Depending on the damage, we will usually smooth the tooth and bond it with a tooth-coloured composite, or fit a crown. If the nerve is affected, you may need root canal treatment. Call us and we will fit you in.
Knocked-out adult tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown, the part you normally see, and try not to touch the root. If it is dirty, clean it gently with a little milk or saliva. If you can, place it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in a small pot of milk. Do not try this with a child's baby tooth, as it can damage the adult tooth underneath. Call us straight away, as time matters.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown safe if it has come out in one piece. Keep the area clean and try not to chew on that side. Call us so we can refit or replace it.
Swelling
Facial or gum swelling can be a sign of infection and should be seen quickly. If swelling is spreading fast, or you are finding it hard to breathe or swallow, treat it as a medical emergency and call 999 or go to A&E. Otherwise, call us.
Whatever has happened, the safest next step is to phone the practice on 023 8084 3318.
